MAKING MY OWN CLOTHES | Handmade Wardrobe Project | NO CLOTHES SHOPPING | LIVE SHOW | SEWING REPORT

At the beginning of the year, I announced that I was going to make my own clothes as part of a journey to sew a handmade wardrobe.

So how’s that all going?
Can women truly make their own clothes instead of shopping at the mall or online from fast fashion companies?

The goal was to not buy any new clothing – anything new had to be made / sewn.

I’m fine with wearing RTW clothes I already own, since at this point it’s a “sunk cost.”

Since starting this project, I’ve made tops, dresses, leggings, lounge wear, and even UNDERWEAR. I’d still like to try and attempt a swimsuit, some warmer clothing like pants and fall/winter dresses/suiting.

ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT THAT STARTED IT ALL:

With less than 5 months left, I can safely say I should be able to get through that time period without any issues. Besides clothing, I have not even bought any shoes or accessories.

My RTW bras are still in decent shape (I know, I haven’t made a bra yet!), and I rarely wear socks – so those have not worn out.

If you’re considering embarking on your own journey to streamline your closet and avoid fast fashion, it’s entirely possible. Being apart of the slow fashion movement feels incredibly meaningful, and it’s fun to sew your own clothes.

Another thing I’ve learned is that I really DON’T need as much stuff as I previously thought I did.

Helooooooo, for the bra cups, its kinda easy, usually you can use the ones they sell you in the fabric store and if you got friends (like me) who hates padding ask them for the padding so you can use it instead of throwing it away. Usually if you want your dress to have some padding then you sew the padding inside of the dress, in between of the principal fabric and the lining fabric, so you sew the padding to the lining with a blinging stitch and you make sure that when you are sewing it you make the lining mold to the padding so when you put the dress on, its gonna look good, your girls are gonna be backed up and your breast its not gonna be irritated with the padding, you can also use nipple covers if you feel like the lining could irritated you. You CAN NOT put padding on a dress that doesn’t have lining cause while you could think it will not irritated your skin or nipples the padding could absorb the detergent if its not washed properly and it could also easily deform your breast (in the dress or garment) with the washing machine or time.

Love your podcast. I cut my own hair. Got a book outa the library. Can’t stand the beauty industry and how it gouges us. Love you low maintenance approach. So refreshing.

LOL..I have the same sweatpants from old navy too…I bought them in 2005 or 2006 from the clearance rack…:)

Your hair looks great btw……I have been told that my hair is extremely thick……someone once said to me I have Filipino hair…..my boss is Filipino and not sure what thats all about…..maybe…..not sure….never put my hands through Filipino hair……Hahaha! Maybe I should ask my Filipino peeps:)

Kenya, My first project was a seatbelt purse….I was determined to have one…it was challenging but I did it because I really couldnt afford the real harveys seatbelt purses…..I think if you have the determination to do something….you will learn no matter what but DO NOT get discouraged…..if you want to do garments watch a lot of videos and start with simple skirts…..forgiving fabric instead of form fitted garments…..but dont give up on that idea…YOU WILL GET THERE!!! Just my opinion:)

You should try simplicity 2889 for bra and panties. If you look it up on YouTube she has a great little video.

Yea, can't believe I missed that MAJOR plot point! Well here's an inside look at the costume design process of Game of Thrones…https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk00ppQ5nNw

Hi Jennifer here's another place for you to check out. Stitchless TV out of London. The lady does things in a no fuss way, and a lot of times she doesn't use patterns. She is very creative. Also I've not brought clothes in a long time as well, and you will find that the clothes you make last far longer than the clothes you buy in the store. I am still on a pair of Jeans that I made 5 yrs ago, and they are in great shape.

Hi, Great hair cut! I liked your hair before and after the cut. Your husband, did a fantastic job and most importantly, you like your new style and it suits your lifestyle. I can't believe it costs so much just for a hair cut, hope you enjoy the savings you made 🙂

Regarding the button holes, my tip is to practice a few times on scrap fabric first until you're happy. Use a erasable marker pen to mark the holes and just take your time making them. Watch the thread tension too. You can do this.

Currently completing my sewing backlog this week, and just started my 2nd ever quilt! Plus completing a series of sewing tips youtube videos. Hoping that by writing it on here, will give me the incentive to finish everything by next Sunday and not get distracted with baking cakes! Have a great week.

Jennifer I love to shop for clothes but I have been with you about making my own clothes. I don't think I will ever make my own panties and bras but making clothes that no one else has is fantastic. Like I am going to Cancun in the morning and made outfits hopefully dinner or dancing and a few dresses I made before and some shorts. I have committed that from now on I will make outfits for trips instead of buying.
