Woodturning – Handmade Wooden Penguins

Woodturning – Handmade Wooden Penguins

I turned and carved these wooden penguins. I first turned them on the lathe between centers, before turning one end off center. With the band saw I rough cut the beak shape before using the Arbortech mini turbo to refine the shape. After taping the front part with masking tape I painted them with a airbrush. The final step was to finish them with two coats of clear lacquer.

  1. I turned and carved these wooden penguins. I first turned them on the lathe between centers, before turning one end off center. 2. 1) I've only just stumbled upon your channel and am LOVING IT!!!!!!!!!
    2) I think the baby penguin makes this project hit that Perfect! score that's often so hard to reach, imo

  3. You are on fire Carl!! These turned out so good. Mind blown after watching your last 5 videos in a row, they are all so good!! Loved the outtakes =D

  4. For someone who does not draw well, what is the best way to contour the belly and get that nice shape? Great project.

    Thanks, Keith.

  5. Came out really nice! One thing I did wonder is why you didn't use the hole in the bottom to hang them for finishing? It would have kept you from touching the finish to turn.

  6. close up shots, more detail about the process as your piece is taking shape and at closing the piece to be presented and talked about up close and personal. people want to see. that's what we're here for

  7. Love the project! My main takeaway is the step-by-step for the off-center turning. So obvious when you think about it, yet it never occurred to me when I tried off-center turning and my lathe tried to walk out on me. Thanks for the inspiration, Carl!

  8. love them probably the best penguin on lathe that i have seen ! you are an amazing artist !! i love also the painting on the small one !!! and of cause the end of the video lol !!

  9. Not only are you a fantastic woodturner, but you also choose appropriate music. Keep up the great work.

  10. Really neat project! You have great vision to see the penguin in the wood. I enjoyed the outtakes that show the vision didn't come quite naturally, but in the end, you figured it out!
Lots of fun to watch, thanks Carl!
    Phil

  11. These are great. I do have several questions. What was the point of turning off center? Was this an essential part of making the shape or was this a mitigation technique to work around some flaws in the wood?
Also you used a nice airbrush for the paint but not the lacquer. Would the airbrush tool have applied the lacquer better?
One last question. I assume this lathe is inside your home and if so is the smell of the lacquer a problem?

Again thank you for this video.

  12. I want to buy penguins like this sooo bad ugh I love penguins and wood projects! Great job as always

  13. Those look very nice. One question, isn't it better to saw of the corners of your blank with the bandsaw before starting to turn it?

  14. Those came out great. I thought your painting setup on top of your lathe was interesting. I would have never thought of doing that.

  15. very cool .not sure if you know but your instagram link is broken it dont work how ever i still found you buddy followed you there to . check your link brother

  16. I always look forward to new videos from you, Carl, and you never disappoint. This is a fantastic idea and, as I don't have the arbortech, I'm going to have a go with wood files.
